FAQ

  • What is the AAMFT?
    • The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. They represent the professional interests of more than 50,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. The AAMFT membership includes membership in your state or provincial AAMFT Division. Throughout the United States and Canada, AAMFT’s 54 Divisions give you the local contacts, professional education, peer relationships, mentoring guidance and member services that create true value for your membership, and put the “Family” into AAMFT. Your AAMFT Division is your first and best stop for news on employment and practice building opportunities in your state/province. You can find help in preparing for licensure and navigating the licensing process in your state. The Division represents you at the state or provincial government on legislative and regulatory matters that affect your ability to make a living. You will find opportunities to enhance your leadership skills, increase your client base, stay up-to-date on the latest innovations in the field and meet, work with and enjoy some the finest professional people you can imagine – your AAMFT Division colleagues.
    • Each U.S. state except Vermont has a chartered AAMFT Division. Maryland, Delaware and Washington, DC have combined to form one Division. In Canada, AAMFT Divisions are found in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. AAMFT provides a dual membership. As a member, you belong to both the Central organization and to your Division. Dues are combined into one annual billing, part of which goes to each segment of the Association.
